How does VoIP Work?

If you don’t have a clue about what VoIP is, or how it works, I’ll catch you up with the basics. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is the latest innovation to telephony. In the last decade we’ve seen a huge growth in VoIP usage as more companies have switched their voice over IP services to VoIP. VoIP provides businesses with improved quality of call and lower call charges. In this article, we’ll explain what VoIP is and how it’s used by your average business.

VoIP Phone Service

To understand how VoIP works, you need to understand how the conventional phone works. Basically, a phone service provides phone connectivity between you and the person you’re calling. So, for example if you call an AT&T corporate number, you’re actually talking to a part of the company which is called the AT&T Network. When you call that number, the AT&T Network will forward your call to someone within their own corporate network who will then forward the call to the person you’re calling.

This is the basics of how a normal telephone works. The difference here is that instead of the company you’re calling having their own network, their phone service has its own network. You can simply imagine that a normal phone has three to four extensions. If you were calling from your office, you’d have a landline, an internet connection (using a high speed connection), and a cell phone (that would be another extension). If you call a VoIP service, you’ll have a single telephone number registered to your name.

So, what’s all the fuss about? Many people ask why it’s so important to switch over to a VoIP Phone Service. After all, many companies are using the same method of communication – the telephone. Isn’t it just another phone? Not quite. While the phone you have now probably works just fine, it’s very likely that you can make more calls with your regular phone, but you’ll miss out on some important calls.

VoIP is a system which uses a digital transmission rather than traditional phone lines. Instead of transmitting information by physical lines, the VoIP system allows you to talk to people via a computer network. Since the VoIP system isn’t transmitting information by physical lines, you don’t have to worry about interference. With traditional phones, if somebody else in the same house happens to use the phone, there’s a chance that you’ll hear some interference.

What kind of features does VoIP Phone Service Plans come with? The more features you get, the better off you’ll be. Most VoIP services come standard with a high-speed broadband connection. This will allow your VoIP Phone Service provider to deliver crystal clear sound quality – not just the voice quality of your regular phone. Some VoIP providers also provide DVR capabilities, so you can watch your voice demos on another network (or even over your local network).

You’ll also want to consider how easy it is to set up VoIP Phone Service.

In order to get started, you’ll need to go through a process that connects you to a local VoIP network. Usually, you’ll use your regular phone line, which connect to the network, and your VoIP adapter – this connects to your computer network, where the rest of the set-up takes place. Once that’s done, all you need to do is configure VoIP as described by the particular company you’re subscribing to. Usually, all you have to do is follow the instructions that come with your VoIP Phone Service plan.

There are some things that vary from VoIP provider to a VoIP provider. Some VoIP providers will charge extra for international calling plans. Others don’t offer DVR recording capabilities, nor do they usually offer the same wide range of standard phone features.

  • But because VoIP doesn’t replace your traditional landline or cell phone service, it’s perfect if you only make and receive phone calls while using VoIP.
  • If you use your phone more to check email or send text messages, though, a dedicated phone line might be something you’re interested in.
  • Once you’re set up with a VoIP Phone Service plan, you can expect to make and receive unlimited phone calls – just like your regular phone.
